STYRENE
Properties
The product is light and transparent liquid with sweet odor. It is very active and easy to be self-polymerized. Polymerization will speed up under heat and sunshine, or after contact with air or peroxide.
Usage
Styrene is an important basic organic chemical. It has been applied in the production of polystyrene and co-polymerization resin, ion exchange resin. It also can be used in pharmaceuticals and coating industry. Packaging
Styrene shall be kept in special iron cars or white iron barrels, which are dry and clean. Proper amount of inhibitor should be added to avoid polymerization. Styrene per barrel is 160kg. the cover of the barrel should be sealed to avoid effusion of styrene and water infiltration into the barrel. Safety
Styrene monomer is inflammable. It can be exothermically polymerized after contact with peroxide, mineral acid and aluminum trioxide. Styrene vapor exceeding the maximum concentration can inhibit nervous system, irritate mucous membrane and cause headache and insomnia. Long time exposure can do harm to liver, nervous system and hematopoietic organ. For acute poisoning, fresh air and milk shall be provided prior to medical treatment. Artificial respiration must be carried out under respiratory arrest. Clean the skin with soap is one touches the styrene.
